Research and due diligence

Most research you can buy is a summary. Somebody reads the same first page of search results you would have read, arranges it neatly, and hands it back to you. If you then have to defend the conclusion to a partner, a lender or a board, you have nothing underneath it.

CITED WHAT I COULD NOT ESTABLISH

An answer you can defend

What I give you is the findings, the source for each one, and what I could not establish. That last part matters. A research document with no open questions in it is a document that stopped looking.

If you run a business

  • What is a competitor actually doing? Not their marketing, their operation. What they charge,

how they staff it, where they are weak.

  • Is this market real? Before you build the thing, or hire for it, or sign the lease.
  • What is true about this business? Before you buy it, invest in it, or partner with it.
  • Where does my own name show up, and what does it say? What a customer, a recruiter or a

counterparty finds when they look you up, and what to do about the parts you do not control.

If you are buying, investing, or advising someone who is

This is the harder half of the work, and it is where two decades of running operations does something a research analyst cannot.

Operational due diligence on a target

The financials tell you what happened.

They do not tell you whether it can happen again without the owner in the building.

I look at the operation itself: what the systems actually do as opposed to what they were sold as, where the business depends on one person, how much of the margin is real and how much is deferred maintenance, what customer and supplier concentration looks like underneath the summary, and what integration will genuinely cost after close. I have run the post-merger version of this from the inside, which is a different vantage point from reading a data room.

Industry and supply chain research

Manufacturing, distribution, aerospace and defense, construction, real estate.

What a sector actually looks like at ground level, who the real counterparties are, where the constraints sit, and what the compliance burden does to the economics.

Research against the public record

Licensing, registration, corporate filings and regulator records.

What the record actually says about a party, as opposed to what the party says about itself, cited so you or your counsel can check every line.

Other research

If the question is specific, defensible and somebody is going to be asked to stand behind the answer, it probably fits.

Ask.

How it works

Scope, deadline and price are agreed before I start. You get a written scope that says what questions will be answered, what sources will be used, and when it lands. Fixed price, quoted per piece of work.

You get the evidence, not just the conclusion. Findings are cited to something you can go and check yourself.

You get what I could not establish, named as such, rather than smoothed over.

If I got something wrong, fixing it is free. That is a correction, not a revision.
